Russian Trilobite
Russian Trilobite
- Species: Asaphus kowalewskii
- Location: St Petersburge, Russia
- Age: Middle Ordovician (471 - 458 MYA)
- Specimen: 3 inch (bug), 5 x 3 inch (matrix)
This stunning high quality Asaphus kowalewskii features the incredible "periscope" eyes—long, stalk-like ocular pedestals—that allowed this predator to remain buried in the Ordovician seafloor while scanning the water for prey. These eyes are a perfect example of adaptation; A. kowalewskii evolved the longest stalks of any species in its genus to thrive in the muddy, sediment-heavy environments of the ancient Baltica sea.
