Glyptodon Osteoderm
- Species: Glyptotherium arizonae
- Location: Peace River, Florida
- Age: Pleistocene (2.5 MYA - 11000 YA)
- Specimen: 1.5 x 1 inch
This exceptional fossil is an osteoderm (armored scute) from the Glyptodon, the massive, tank-like megafauna of the Pleistocene which looks like Armadillo. These prehistoric giants were heavily armored with a thick carapace composed of hundreds of these interlocking hexagonal plates. This specific specimen showcases the intricate, rosette-like pitting and rugged texture that provided a near-impenetrable defense against Ice Age predators.
