The Dog-Whale: Nature’s Wildest Trick

The Dog-Whale: Nature’s Wildest Trick

The Animal That Had Two Lives

Imagine an animal that looked like a big, furry dog with long legs and little hooves, running around the rivers of Pakistan 50 million years ago. Scientists call him Pakicetus, which means "Pakistan whale." Even though he lived on land and had fur, he is actually the great-great-great grandfather of the giant blue whales that swim in the ocean today!

Going for a Swim

A long time ago, Pakicetus realized that the rivers were full of delicious fish. He started splashing into the water to catch his lunch. At first, he just waded like a dog, but over a very long time, his babies and grandkids got better and better at swimming. Their ears even changed so they could hear secrets under the water, just like real submarines!

Turning Into a Whale

As millions of years passed, these animals stayed in the water so much that their bodies changed to help them swim faster. Their front legs flattened into flippers, their back legs disappeared because they didn't need to walk anymore, and their noses moved to the top of their heads to become blowholes. It is one of the coolest tricks nature ever pulled—turning a land pup into a giant of the deep blue sea!
