Dust & Fossils: Navigating the Gem Show

Dust & Fossils: Navigating the Gem Show

Personal Tips for Fossil Addicts:

Tucson is a massive treasure hunt. To find the best fossils without getting lost, focus on these five key stops:

  • 22nd Street (The Family Favorite)
    • This is the big, energetic tent. It’s perfect for kids and features large, common fossils like ammonites and Megalodon teeth. While most items are for general collectors, you can occasionally find a rare gem in the showcase section.
  • The Co-op (The High-End Mecca)
    • A must-see for serious collectors. This is where you find museum-quality specimens and world-class preparation. It’s the "gold standard" for the best fossils on the market.
  • Fossil Alley (The Variety Hub)
    • Set up in a classic hotel layout, this spot features dealers from all over the country specified in fossil. It is the best place to hunt for trilobites, shark teeth , and all kinds of other fossil, ranging from affordable finds to specialized rarities.
  • RMGM (The Colorful Mix)
    • While heavy on minerals wholesale, this show is one of the great place to find fossil. There’s a always great vendor who sells Ammolite from Canada, if you want fossils with high visual impact and vibrant colors.
  • Kino (The Bulk & Rough Stop)
    • The go-to for raw materials and lower-end fossils. If you want to dig through bins of rough stone or buy in bulk, this is the most budget-friendly location.

Pro Tip: Selection vs. Savings

  • Go Early: For rare, "must-have" items, arrive in the first few days. Things sell out fast, I have seen many years that things were taken by wholesale the first morning. (note that Fossil Alley at Days Inn normally open earlier than official show kickoff date.)
  • Go Late: For common items and better deals, wait until the end of the show. Dealers are more likely to bargain when they are facing t+he cost of shipping heavy rocks back home.
